In Malaysia, garden trees are usually selected based on the size of the compound and whether the goal is shade, ornament, or privacy.

Major categories of trees in local nurseries:

1. Shade & Canopy Trees

These are the "coolers" of the garden. They have wide-spreading branches that significantly lower the temperature of your house.

2. Flowering & Ornamental Trees

These are smaller than shade trees and are grown primarily for their visual impact or fragrance.

3. Fruit Trees

Many Malaysians prefer "functional" trees that provide food.

4. Privacy & Screening Trees

Used as "living fences" to block the view from neighbors or the street.

5. Palm Trees
